AOW 22-Response

History repeats itself and these situations remind me of the 1800s with Andrew Jackson and Calhouns nullification crisis. I think state’s rights are really important because the state is closer to the people than the national government but federal government knows more higher level details we dont and we need it very much. The US would not be the superpower it is without a good federal government(whether you agree with the leadership or not). I dont agree with nullification because it gives states to much power, and if they can just turn down anything they want the unity is dissolved and authority is dissolved. The radical effect of that would be chaos and anarchy. Even if there is a really bad law you disagree with, it should be approaches at a national level to keep the power ditributed correctly. but I also believe that if the government passes something against my belief and is violating my rights, freedom, or belief I will stand up and disobey the law if necessary. The probability of the government passing something so contriversial is very slim though.

AOW 22-Questions

2. Why are people challenging laws at a state level rather than directly sttempting to influence the federal government? Which level of government is likely to be more swiftly responsive to local opinion? Can these local blocks indirectly influence federal policy?

The state level is easier to get to listen to common peoples requests. The federal government is very large and has the wellfare of the country to care about and can spend less time on indivisual wants and needs. State governments are supposed to fix the peoples direct needs, specifically special exceptions to the people of that area. State government indirectly affects federal government because the state representitives make up Congress who make laws. State government has a bigger affect on smaller groups of people(such as states). Because states are local they care more about thier people than the nations people like the federal government does.

7. Why does the federal government exist? What are some activities that have to be done at the federal level?

We have to have a federal government to regulate the nation and unite us. If all there were was state governments, there would be chaos because there would be different laws and regulations in every state. Federal government has to regulate currency, commerce, foriegn relations, and defense. These items have to be the same for the entire nation or its not a stable country and there would be war. A nation needs to have the same form of money and regulation of trade so the country can interact within itself but also so that other countries will want to trade with us, if we all had different currency/commerce it would be difficult for foriegn business. We also need standard and the same defense system to adaquetly keep our whole country safe.

Synthesis: The magnanimous leader equivocate his peers and rid them of their malevolent intentions.

Divergence: amorphous-clouds, jello, water, air,

Analysis: cor in excoriate comes from Latin corium which means skin or hide. This creates the harsh definition of excoriate. If cor meant heart then excoriate would have a meaning similar to outer heart.

Evaluation: the US should have a bilateral or multilateral defense policy to avoid conflict and negotiate with other countries. If it was unilateral, other countries would have problems with it and we would do nothing thus leading to conflict.

Intuition: The big bang theory is commonly accepted as the cause of the universe, but i disagree and suspect it is specious.

Emotion: If my brother was asking captious questions, I would be a little hurt that he didnt trust me and angry that he was just trying to find something I did wrong.

Aesthetics: I appreciate abstract art but I wouldnt prefer anthropomorphic sculpture, i like more detailed abstract. Although human silhouettes are cool.

3-D movies. The technology has gotten alot better…but $15 tickets seems kinda extreme. I dont really like 3-D, or prefer it. Its cool but Id take a good story over 3-D any day. The story and plot is the most important to me. Unfortunatly these concepts are not as important anymore, the visual and surface ideas is whats appealing. A shallow culture. Appreciation is a factor, standards are lower. My parents own a film and video production company so Im exposed to alot of production, and Im pickier on what movies I like. I scrutinize them more and notice things most people wont. Regardless of my evaluations, people are forgetting and not appreciating works of art, they dont see the messages movies potray. And thats cause alot of movies dont have clear strong messages anymore. Theres an attitude that makes good content, the indepth storys ect., seem boring or to complicated. This being said, there isnt a reason to jack prices way up for bad productions. And why people think high prices will just be accepted in our economy I dont understand. Theres a point where people will sacrifice money for brainless entertainment, but this seems extreme.

AOW 21- Questions

2. Are the price increases reasonable due to the popular demand of 3-D movies?

Althought the demand seems to be going up, the prices are unreasonable. $15 for an hour of entertainment, even 3-D movies, seems kind of ridiculous. Especially with the economy in such a slump. I want to see movies for their story content, but because alot of people dont care or dont seem to notice, paying that much for an awesome visual experience is worth it. When prices raise that much I think the industry will take a hit because people arent willing to spend $60 on an hour of free time( thats not even free!!) when they could buy their next 6 meals. Personally i think 3-D is overrated a little, mostly cause i value the content and production more than the apparant visual shell.

3. Why so you think box office sales are up while we are suffering from a weak economy?

Because the economy is hurting everyone, people want to relax and escape their lives, which is why they go to movies. They can forget their lives and live some one elses for an hour. Box office sales are up now for this reason, but because there is less money, people are careful what they spend it on and therefor there is a greater amount of money in the movie industry than other areas. The movies have reached record highs, but results may look slightly inflated because peoples money is not going to many other entertaintment choices.

“I think a reasonable person would deem that being turned away,” Jurkowski said. This is the response of a congressman to a doctors protest against health care. His form of protest consisting of posting a sign on his door saying “If you voted for Obama, seek urologic care elsewhere. Changes to your healthcare begin right now, not in four years.” This is harsh some would say rude or inconsiderate, maybe the truth maybe not. But truth be told, I admire this doctor for openly saying his opinion. This is what makes America great, the power of the people, freedom of speech. The congressman needs to take a look at what he said, he is accusing the doctor of refusing healthcare. But also attacking his freedom of speech, which is a right in the constitution he is to uphold. There is something wrong with that. It shows that people are putting political agendas ahead of the common good of the country and other important things such as keeping the union strong, connected, and protecting our rights which distinguish us from the world. There was another article where a congressman was asked something about the health care bill being unconstitutional and his response was that he didnt care, he was going to stop people from dying by implementing the bill. Another comment made by a congressman was “I believe the constitution gives us life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” It was pointed out to him that that was in the Declaration of Independence. That is so…hilarious and stupid and scary that our leaders dont care what the constitution says and dont know whats in it! Thats an exageration but my point should be clear.

The doctor was doing nothing wrong and was not asking his patients political opions before helping them. It was peaceful protest that effected many people and got the attension of the country. He stood up for what he believed in and that is the American spirit and heart, which should be what the government should be trying to protect, not tear down because they disagree or the statements attack their programs. And maybe if more people did things like this doctor, they would get the message that the United States is by the people, not for the people.

Idealism vs Realism

Idealism and realism, two very important aspects to life. Idealists are the dreamers, auntrapunurers, and people who are told to get back on earth. These people are the ones who shape culture, inventions, and discovery. Yet you can not be all ideas. Realists are very logical, sometimes to a point where it would seem nothing is possible because of all the risks, but they have a view of whats really there. The evidence and tangible things are what realists pick out. In history we are learning about the time of reform and where our American culture comes from. Romanitists were more idealistic, they focused on the untangible, what was on the inside was more important. Realists settled the new lands. But to be realistic, you must be idealistic. The two terms go hand in hand. You can not live off of dreams, yet you can not live without them. Idealists take risks and have faith, but if they lose sight of the real part of the situation, the problems, then you will fail. Idealists seem more optimistic, but too much optimism creates a situation where you cant realize what you are doing wrong. Thats when you have to be real and truthful. Realists seem more organized, cautious, not pesimist but less in the clouds, stating the bad exactly how it is. But to overcome any challenge you must have a reason to believe and be able to analyze the situation to solve it.

During the Civil War, two Confederate generals are examples of these mentalities. General Lee was idealistic, odds meant nothing, he went with his gut instict. Had he not been older and wiser with much respect he could have been considered reckless. General Longstreet had a very realistic attitude, do not attack when you are outnumbered and wanted to play defense where he knew they would be safe, he was very cautious.

“The U.S. is getting a reputation, basically, of a country that cannot be trusted for more than five minutes at a time and that’s not the way to build a healthy stable world and it’s not the way to promote U.S. interests.”

This is what foriegn allies are begining to think of the US. As a power house country, we need to be trusted and know we can trust our allies, but foriegn countries are begining to feel like we are taking our personal internal problems over worldwide issues. An Indonesian trip was postponed twice due to the health care reform session, and this was frowned upon and stated that President Obama must be able to multitask and not focus only on American issues. This is true because the world does not wait for us to catch up, and if President Obama gets to far behind and puts us first, not that thats an incredibly terrible idea, we will lose respect and responsibily. Looked at as the spoiled child who doesnt care about anything outside its room. Which is not true at all. But the valid point is made that we cant postpone world affairs just because President Obama wishes to be present during his health care reforms. Allies are begining to feel as if they are being taken for granted, as if we just expect former friends to stay reliable friends. This is not good because we need our allies and our friends, to become disconnected or to offend creates tension and tight situations that would be best avoided. Being a powerful country means people look up to us, and view us as a valuable partner. When that begins to difuse, we begin to lessen because we are out of touch with the world or less connected because  we offend other countries. This is a tricky subject to be handled carfully and although our counrties well being is important, there is always a bigger picture, in this case, the whole world.

The first line make you think floating is a really bad thing. “The state constitution doesnt say, in so many words, that Carl Mitz has the absolute right to pry open a horse’s mouth, grab hold of the tongue, and commence sawing away at the back molars with a power tool.” I read that and my jaw dropped thinking this was some gruesome, insane persons idea of fun. But it is actually for the good and benefit of the horse. And due to complaints and safety hazard to the horses some states are requiring a license for “floating” or filing the molars of a horse. If the governments force a license for floating, what will come next? To some people floating is normal but I think it is probably being played up as “save the poor animals” when its like clipping nails for us. Dont get me wrong, animal abuse is unacceptable, but floating is done to keep the horse chewing in a regular pattern and make sure it doesnt cut the inside of its mouth, a necessary process. The other kicker is that some states do nothing about it and others require license plus. Which shows that it has alot to do with where the state is and how much horses are used. In Texas horses are normal and have a big part in our history and so floating wouldnt be as big a deal and would be more normal than in a state where horses and floaters are rare and unpracticed. It should be the peoples job to be responsible to who they trust to file their horses teeth.

AOW 20 Questions

2.What steps are necessary to obtain a license to become a floater? If the Institute of Justice were unable to demonstrate that these requirements are unnecessary, would they be able to argue that they are unconstitutional?

There is a 300-hour class offered by the Texas Institute of Equine Dentistry and the International Association of Equine Dentistry certifies floaters who pass a test where they have to diagnose dental ills of 20 skulls of horse cadavers. Some states also allow certified vets to operate as floaters. For the Institute of Justice to argue that these requirements are unconstitutional, they would need to be proven unnecessary so that Article 1, Section19 can be used to show that the government is “disfranchising” and taking away “privileges”. If the requirements are really necessary, the argument is much harder because there is less to fight for and the facts to prove floating legal without a license becomes an argument with almost no back up.

4.What is the stated purpose of the licensing requirements? Is this a valid justification?

The safety of the animals is “quite a reasonable concern of the government” and therfore the government is trying to protect the animals by requiring a license for floating. But the lawyers make a point that if floating has to be licensed how far will the government go to protect and insure safety? Although the safety of animals is important and there were complaints about bad floating, requiring everyone to be licensed is not exactly the best solution. There are people who have a profession in this and have had a lifetime of experience who would be forced to take a 300 hour course of pass a test to continue making their living. The problem is that the government can not protect every aspect of ours and animals lives. Therefore people must make wise desisions, and for those who complain they should research who they are hiring to opperate on their horses teeth to make sure they are reliable.
